Removing soot spots

A friend asked me if I had any ideas for spot removing soot smuts from a pale coloured wool carpet and I thought I recalled reading about using lighter fluid. However looking online I couldn't trak down the reference...... so I wondered if anyone here had any suggestions.

Salt, Lady A...keep applying and brush off. Never use liquid or wet a soot stain.

Thanks Doug, I've never heard that one before. Luckily she has a spare bit of carpet which was put in front of the fire that she can play with before attempting the fitted area.
