Removing soot from bricks with klingstrip

Had the kitchen chimney breast rebuilt - to raise the opening so that we could fit a cooker in. It's purely cosmetic as the flue isn't used. The original bricks were reused but quite a few had thick layers of soot on. I tried brushing and washing but with only limited success.

Having a bit of klingtrip left over and seeing how it worked with paint I trowelled a 4mm thick layer onto one of the bricks and left for about three days. Bingo - perfectly clean brick.

Just thought I'd pass on the tip.....

Useful to know, thanks Inwood. I presume this was standard Klingstrip - not one of their special formulations?

Just standard klingstrip and very effective, haven't tried it on stone however so if you need to do that I'd test it on a small inconspicuous area first.
