Removing paint

Any tips for removing several layers of gloss paint from stone hearth tiles? The paint has worn away in several areas already, revealing a beige coloured stone.

Also, we'd like to remove the paint from the metal straps on a ledge and brace cupboard door - is there a way of doing this in situ without affecting the paintwork on the door?

Have a chat with Strippers of Sudbury (see below). Describe the paint to them and they will recommend which of their paint strippers is best for that specific job.

Thanks so much David, I'll give them a call. With a bit of luck the paint'll come off and we can crack on with replacing the fireplace. I've found a reproduction insert online at Pendragon Fireplaces that matches the age of our cottage, just need to get up to the midlands to take a look at it!

Uh???

Shouldn't think so he's been gone for about 25 years.... but my "Dad" is used to me getting him to do things like this. His passion is photography and since his retirement he just goes round taking pictures, so giving him a reason to take one or two would end up with a couple of dozen and a happy Dad!!!!!!

They are in and out of Stourbridge all the time, so it wouldn't mean going out of his way.

He's unfortunately reached the age where he can no longer help out with the heavy jobs that need to be done, like digging the ditch for the electricity cable so it makes him still feel needed <IMG SRC="http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/discussing/smileys/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="">

Thanks so much for the offer, that's so kind of you (and your dad!) In fact I grew up locally to Stourbridge so combined a visit to the folks with a visit to Pendragon on the weekend. Very pleased as we've found a perfect grate for our living room there, just need to double check the dimensions and confirm the order now.
Can't wait to get cracking removing the old one!
