Removing paint from marble fireplace..

Hi,

I've done a quick search but everything seems to cover wood/slate/cast iron....

The delightful previous owners decided it would be a great idea to paint a victorian marble fireplace surround in yellow gloss, we're now getting round to decorating the room, but have no idea how to strip it and get it back to it's marble self..

If anyone has any tips/hints ideas they'd be much appreciated as we're on a tight budget that doesn't run to paying someone to do it!

Hi Laura,

to avoid the use of any abrasive material e.g wire wool or paint scraper I would of thought a poultice would do the job.

Read the section on removing paint from stone where they discuss marble.

Having used their products on both stone and metal in the past I've been impressed.

We cleaned small patches of black paint off our grey marble fireplace with a toothbrush and Nitromors, very carefully. As marble is porous, the end result depends on whether the paint has soaked in deep. Do a test patch somewhere out of your normal line of sight to see how long to let stripper work. We used a poultice method successfully on our slate mantlepiece which was covered in white gloss, '60's style' improvements! Good luck.
