I wonder if you could offer some guidance I’ve tumbled across a marble fire surround and it has been offered to me for my Period home so long as I can remove it from its original setting.
From what I understand, it will be fixed by means of some form of castingplaster to the brickwork behind the lime plaster.
Having spoken to one person about this who makes a living restoring and reclaiming Period fire surrounds and fireplaces that there is an extremely strong possibility of the marble breaking along it’s veins should I attempt to remove it manually. He said that 7 out of 10 such fire surrounds are broken on removal.
If that is the case then I am pushed to spend money purchasing such an item only for it to be broken when I remove it.
It’s offered for a very fair price with the caveat that I must remove it intact.
If anyone has any guidance as to whether the likelihood of it breaking is particularly high as has been suggested or any guidance on how to remove it without breaking it, I would greatly appreciate it
Thank you
