Removing lime from brick face

We have recently removed the lime plaster from an internal chimney breast and would like to leave it exposed. The problem is that we are having difficulty removing the remnants off the brick face -we've tried using a stiff brush but it seems to just smear it in. We are worried that if we try to use anything harsher that it will damage the bricks which are quite soft. Any advice please?

lemon juice and white vinegar; equal amounts of each.

I use acid based brick cleaner, it dissolves out the lime but does not normally touch the bricks. To use it, make sure the bricks are really wet otherwise the cleaner will soak into the bricks and not touch the surface.

I'd use brick cleaner as chuckey suggests.
B&Q sell it.
Use a paint brush to put it on the parts you want cleaned to keep it away from the pointing/joints.
Then spray/wash off with water.
