Hello, I have a slate fire surround that has been painted. I have started stripping the paint off and underneath there are some slight remains of some faux marbling dotted about. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the remains of the faux marbling as it doesn’t seem to be coming off with the paint stripper. Would sanding it with fine sand paper be an option ?

A photo may be useful here. Are you sure you're not seeing sedimentary inclusions in the slate itself? May be an idea to see if sliding a sharp scraper gently across the surface of the slate toward one of these 'marbles' to see if it encounters an obstruction - this would confirm that it is indeed a surface addition if the slate was originally polished during production.

We had the same issue recently stripping one of ours back. I ended up using an orbital sander to sand the last of the stubborn marbling off. That and a bit of scraping. Once the last of the paint was removed I gave the whole thing a sand down working to 240 grit before applying oil to finish.

It can. Slate can exhibit many inclusions of different colours including, to name a few, white, beige, green, silver and gold. This may explain why a previous owner decided to 'marble' the piece.
Maybe then these are not the remains of marbling at all but just naturally occurring intrusions. Hence they decided to paint it black. I will have to see what it looks like once I’ve finished stripping it. Thank you for your advice. Wonder if anyone else has had a similar slate surround with these bright bits occurring in it ?
