Removing clay flue liner

Hi, I am currently trying to fit a multifuel stove and have been advised to fit a 6 inch steel liner to the chimney - unfortunately on inspection the top 4-5 feet of the chimney has been lined with a slightly damaged clay flue liner which is too narrow to get the new flue through - Is it possible to remove this without removing and subsequently rebuilding the chimney stack? So far I have tried hammering away at it with a long sharpened metal rod - but it is painfully slow work! Thanks.

What's the diameter of the chimney, and how wide are you across the shoulders?!

Sorry, but I reckon your only option is to continue your tedious chipping away. Could you reach the clay liner with an SDS drill fitted with a chisel point? That might be a little quicker.

Reduce the six inch liner to a five inch at this point? A clay liner must be rather longer lasting. How is it secured/packed around in the flue?

Alas its far narrower than my shoulders - I do however have a young nephew who might just fit <IMG SRC="http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/discussing/smileys/wink.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="">

It's about 3-4ft below the top part of the chimney so I don't think an SDS would fit - I'd also be a bit worried about doing more damage to the stack! I think you are right - it might be back to chipping away at it slowly!

i would be asking myself why its there ? When and how was it fitted ? Could the stack have been repaired at some point and the liners fitted to help strengthen it ?

What diameter is the flue at that point can you put a smaller flue in as Evelyn suggests ?
