removing cement based render from a wooden floor

I have just moved into a new property and the kithchen had a raised floor with quarry tiles that were loose as the floor was not level. The tiles and base were removed leaving the wooden floor that is covered in a cement render parts are dry and crumbly but other bits are hard and ridged. I thought it may be possible to sand it but perhaps not and a solvent might destroy the floor. Any ideas of what to do.

Have you been able to form any impression of the condition of the floorboards under the cement? If they're in good condition, then obviously it's worth taking time and trouble to remove the cement.

However, I just wonder whether the cement and tiles were laid in the first place because the floorboards were knackered.

How old is the floor? What wood are the boards? Is the house listed?

just a suggestion... take up a board and look at the underside - if they are good just turn them over <IMG SRC="http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/discussing/smileys/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="">

So if I understand correctly - which I very much doubt - your floor is made of the following layers:

quarry tiles
base of unstated composition
cement render
wood

and this is in a new house!

This is one of those cases where our language can't quite cope, isn't it? We don't refer to "my second-hand car", however many previous owners it may have had, and there is a similar problem with houses.
Perhaps Sue will let us know the age of her 'new' house?
