Removing bitumen paint

Any one have a neat way to remove thick-black-tarry-bitumen paint from pitch pine bargeboards?

(Without setting fire to the loft.....)

Heat gun with variable settings.
Take a pressure garden sprayer up there with you; always useful to have one of those around when heating stuff that might do the combustion thing.

edit - whatever you can't (be bothered to) remove will need to be well sealed in with aluminium primer, otherwise it will bleed through into your new paint.

Strippers of Sudbury - well-known to many members of this forum - make a product called Solvistrip that they say is for stripping bitumastic paints.

However, they're not entirely clear about what substrates it can be used on. I should give them a call and discuss your particular need. I've always found them very helpful.
