We are renovating an old farmhouse, we have flagstone slate floor in one room which was covered in carpet years ago, we have removed the carpet and are now left with a layer of orangey/brown adhesive (which I suppose must be carpet glue) which will not shift. Some of the flagstone was also covered in red paint which I have removed but I can't find anything to remove this glue..any suggestions would be most welcome.

Try a heat gun and a scraper OR slathering it in petroleum jelly/mineral spirits and letting it sit for a couple of days. This will work for the Gorilla Glue/Liquid nails types of adhesives (the modern builder's super adhesives). I've used the heat gun method with success over small areas, but have never tried it over large areas, like a floor. It might take a while to get the floor to heat up enough to soften the glue, as that flagstone will be a heat sink.
I've read about the petroleum jelly method and just now double checked it with the mfr website to make sure I remembered it correctly, but have never tried it as I'm not the patient sort.

I'd be wary of putting anything greasy on a flagstone floor - it's hard to remove grease stains once soaked in. I speak with feeling and personal experience.
Slate might not react well either to a heat gun.
Strippers I am sure will have the appropriate remover, they are very good and have a wide range of products.

I agree that the jelly or the mineral spirits will darken anything that is porous. To me, that is one of the tradeoffs of removing glue... better a darker area than the glue. But that's a decision that Klewis will have to make, what doesn't bother me, will bother other people.
I haven't ever had a problem with heat guns on stone, however. They don't get that hot (about 140 degrees). I've even flamed stone with a blowtorch to remove paint, permanent marker and such. The trick is to not hold the flame on anything for more than a second or two. Slate is, after all, used on hearths.
Whatever he does, the best thing is to test in a hidden area first.
