Removing adhesive from a brick step

Hello! I wondered if anyone had any idea how to remove adhesive from bricks? In our hall there is a beautiful old brick step which was carpeted over when we moved in. The carpet was glued on and now the bricks are covered in this unsightly gluey mess which is curently a magnet for dog hair and dust. The floor in the porch is laid with the same brick tiles and looks beautiful...I really want to restore the step to it's former glory. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

When I lifted floor tiles from a wood floor, I had a similar adhesive layet to deal with. There are 3 options I would recommend (in this order)

1. Try using a 'floor scraper' tool from your local B&Q. Change the blades regularly as they lose their edge. After removing the bulk, use hot water and a scrubbing brush

2. Failing this, Strippers NB-510 worked for me (it's a 2-part mix)..you could speak with them and get their advice and perhaps order a trial pack (small enough for a step)

3. Use a 'chewing gum freeze spray' http://www.control-infection.co.uk/shop/show_product.php?id=88. This should harden the adhesive and make it easier to chip off with a scraper...but go careful with the bricks
