Good Evening folks,
I have an ugly looking chimney breast with an old school fire which I would like to get rid off. I have had a builder round who said he would charge £350 for the whole job, this includes material and labor but I do not feel this is enough and have the inkling he doesn't know what he is talking about. Pic 1 is my current fire place and I would like to take our the fire, the wood around the edges and the marble on the back and floor. He did say he would take it all out, cut off the gas, use wood around the edges before plastering it. He would also add a piece of wood to create a shelf as in Pic 2.
I would like a finish similar to this which shows the area sealed off and a flower placed there. No electric fire and no gas fire at all.
I was told by a friend I may need a lintel installed to hold up the chimney breast, seal the chimney from the roof but today builder did not mention it at all. I mentioned the lintel for support but he did say it is not needed.
Is a lintel needed? Does the brickwork inside the chimney need to be treated? Does the chimney on the outside need to be closed? Can you guys guide me on what is actually needed to be done and possibly the cost involved? I have a couple more builders coming round and would like to think they know what they're taking about before I agree to any work.
Thank you in advance.
Tim
