Yes I know it's done - St Fagins, Beamish - but a bit of inside info would at this point be useful... as would any freebie offers of surveying, recording, etc etc!

Wow, what a building!

On the plus side, it doesn't look too big. On the negative side, calculating the stresses and loads on those wacky walls will be an engineering nightmare.

Actually, it might be a good practical exercise project for an engineering/architectural school, especially if there's a local one. They probably couldn't do the actual heavy lifting (insurance, liability and equipment problems, I'm sure), but you might get some preliminary planning and structural analysis done by them. A student couldn't fake that project with his professor.

Trouble is we haven't the time to find a student willing to try this out - time is short (and so is cash). We know that there is asbestos in the building (which is why it so far hasn't been bulldozed) but I think it is sheet corrugated under the roofing tiles.

Very sad - there are only three in the country - one historic one (moved to Dymchurch from Battersea - no I don't as yet know how) and a modern one. This is the oldest Crooked House (based originally on the nursery rhyme 'There was a Crooked Man') and a great favourite with children. Built 1948.

The engineers moving the other rides off site for the Dreamland Trust are able to dismantle them (they build coasters etc for a living) but this is really outside their experience.

I loved the links to the wacky houses. It was my smile for the day!

The Pineapple house looks like a Victorian folly. A couple of the modern houses are German or Dutch, I'm pretty sure. The UFO house I've seen before, but I don't recall seeing (in person or in literature) any of the upside-down houses. I think this site is pulling examples from all over, not just the United States, proving that bad-taste (or a sense of humor, as I prefer to think of it) is universal.

Yeah, the second "drunken house" on the crazyhouse website is a Gehry in Prague. I think the first one is a Gehry, as well, but I'd have to look it up. I don't recognize it immediately.

Originally it was mock half-timber.

Well, I can't find the "Residenz" crooked house in my books or online Gehry searches. But my books might be too old and with Gehry's success, I'm sure acolytes and imitators abound. "Residenz" is German, so I would assume it's located there.
