Reglazing a sash window

DOH !!!! the glass broke when I was trying to strip the paint from my sash window.

On further inspection, it seems that the top rail of the bottom sash (the broken one) has a groove in it for the glass, rather than the normal rebate which is filled with putty.

Is this the case usually ? I have reglazed many windows but not sash ones.

How are you supposed to get the old putty out of the groove? it is difficult enough to remove the putty from the rebates normally !!

Hope someone can enlighten me.

The groove is normal.
I have found quite often that there is little glass in the groove, more nearly all putty.
However since you have broken the glass it does mean that you can be brutal when removing it.
An old thin wood chisel (1/4') can be used for digging out the glass and putty while heating the frame with a heat gun.
Just be careful that you don't remove any wood.

A great help, I've managed to reglaze it in record time. The tip about the heat gun was brill as well, I never thought of that before, it made the job loads easier, I shall have to repaint the whole sash, though.
