refacing fireplaces

the back to back fireplaces in my early 1800's cottage have had the added effect of a wonderful coat of paint(very authentic) i wish to return them to their original brick condition however the bricks are looking like second rate i am considering facing the complete fireplace with another tier of quality reclaimed bricks or is there another way?any ideas?

As Moo suggests, a picture would be helpful.

Have you tried stripping the paint? I believe Klingstrip is often used to remove paint from stone, brick, etc. as well as wood.

I suppose if the proposed skin of bricks does no harm to the original fireplace it will protect it for the future.
However the first thing that crossed my mind was what will the bricks be built/stand upon?
And is the property listed?

I assumed k99mn meant that the fireplace is already brickwork, which has been painted.

excellant -just checked their site seems it could save a lot of work also as someone else pointed out i hadn't thought about what my new facing bricks were going to stand on!! amateurs eh!
