Hmm, I like the yellow, but I do think that the wallpaper looks very good indeed. Really evokes the period.

However, I am curious as to why you have so may random picture hooks on the rail, none of which seem to support pictures :shock: Do tell, is it a local tradition to do with witches?

The picture hooks are left over from when I had plates hanging, but they looked awful with the wallpaper, so no witches but a ghost of a former decorative scheme. I tried the dark picture rail by sticking dark painted lining paper over a section and I hated it. There comes a time when I have to throw in the towel and just say it is ok. I am a little disappointed by the wallpaper and I don't think the person that I employed to hang it did the most careful job either, but I have made my peace with it. I have now put a small piano which my son likes very much in the alcove that had the corner cabinet in it which has upset the visual balance a bit, so I am going to have to try and rectify that somehow.

Good grief, that piano is ancient! 1860/70? I guess it's wooden framed and untunable, but very pretty. Do you have the serial number so we can date it?

Serial number is 60255 which I think is around 1884 - 85. Wooden frame with some metal strengthening at the base. It is tuned to Bb and reasonably in tune with itself, but I think bringing it up to C would be a struggle so I'm happy that it is playable at all. A tuner is coming next week to tweek it to get it properly in tune with itself. Are you a player?

Yes, I am a pianist (not professionally) and have an interest in these things.
Broadwood have different numbers depending on the type of piano - assuming it's a "cottage upright" 60255 would give us around 1885.
If you can get the thing in tune(ish) and stay that way, then it's got to be good. It's very different to hear classical pieces on old instruments (though of course a piano like hat would never have handled Brahms...)

Hi Abbi, I'm not a piano player myself, though I do play guitar a bit. My son wants to learn and a friend and I plan to get together to play, him on piano me on guitar. When I said it was tuned to Bb I was using the wrong terminology. What I should have said was 2 semitones flat, ie what was C is now Bb. I assume it has been drifting down for years and when tuned, was tuned to the nearest pitch.

If you play guitar that makes it easy. Simply tune your guitar to the piano. If it's in tune with itself and your in tune with it you will sound perfect. If you can't tune by ear that may require a little jiggery pokery with your tuner, or a better tuner
but it's not particularly difficult. Or at least my mum and dad could manage it. I don't play strings, I'm the woodwind section of the family.
Recorder, Flute, tin whistle, and now concertina. Even flutes and recorders have some tuning options, but on a guitar it's much much easier. Nowhere near as difficult as Vestapol or DADGAD which are a couple of the more obnoxious tunings my partner likes.
As I understand it standard guitar tuning is EADGBE so get your son to play the E on the piano and tune to that as your base note.

That's how my mum used to do it with my first concertina, the A=466 one, she can tune by ear. Dad can't, so for him I had to play all 6 notes so he could get them sorted. Still guitars are a very flexible instrument. Much easier than most. What's the third participant going to be playing?
