Red Wheel Scheme: marking our Transport Heritage for 2012
A new initiative to commemorate Britain's rich and globally important legacy in the development of transport will mark sites of special historic interest with a distinctive Red Wheel Plaque. It is the brainchild of the Transport Trust, the hub of the transport preservation and restoration movement in Great Britain.
Each red wheel will carry links to a dedicated website. Just as transport linked to towns and villages generates economic prosperity, the internet will link each Red Wheel plaque to educate inform and enthuse the nation. The scheme will be structured by county and the selection of sites assisted by input form local historians. The pilot county will be Derbyshire chosen both because of its rich and broadly based historical heritage and also because of its central location.
The scheme, dependent on both public and private sponsorship, will be launched in time to play its part in the 2012 London Olympics and Cultural Olympiad. For further details contact the Transport Trust at info@transporttrust.com Back
