Some ideas never get old - just recycled and claimed as new. The NFUM organisation used heat from their data centre to warm the waters of a swimming pool at their headquarters in Stratford donkeys years ago.

Ah well - what goes around comes around I suppose.

And yet just near Ipswich we have huge commercial greenhouses being forced to close last year due to the cost of being heated by gas, whilst just the other side of the road is a huge waste incinerator that is literally throwing heat away.

Sadly, getting all the interest groups together to produce an effective 'integrated plan' for urban and commercial development, would be quite literally, 'a cat herding venture'.

Although the problem is compounded by the need to time shift so that demand and supply line up. Google "Finland Sand battery"

But as Cubist says, we're just utterly hopeless at any sort of joined up thinking in this country. Which is odd because our illustrious leaders keep assuring us that we are, or will shortly be, "World Leaders".

In my old line of work I would sometimes have to remind myself, and others, that on occasion it was a necessary to 'lead by following'. Counter-intuitive to most peoples thinking but the core of the trick was to make sure that you were not the blind man/woman following the misguided or maladjusted and blinkered blind man/woman.

I blame the cult of the committee. Instead of a brilliant plan you end up with something which the least number of people hate and which everyone agrees to muddle through with. Nobody has enough interest to say it’s the emperors new clothes and must be stopped immediately, a project takes on a life of its own and rumbles towards an unsatisfactory conclusion.
