I understand that thatchers work in 'thatchers squares' and cost up accordingly. So what average price is reasonable to carry out work to small two bed cottage in Suffolk.
Yes, they work in squares. I have a thatcher friend but I know he would never give a price before visiting the site and doing a good deal of sucking through teeth. That said, he tells me that the going rate now is around £1000 per square - that's 10ft by 10ft.
Thank you, that equates to the price I have been offered so I feel more at ease over the cost now. I agree about the 'sucking thru teeth' so far this occurs mainly at the local garage, local builders and now thatchers

We have just had two quotes for a rethatch, one worked out at about 1000 pounds per square, and the other 800. The lower priced thatcher was not VAT registered, which equated to £13000 difference in price!
We also had 3 quotes for a small repair, they ranged from £200 - £1350.
We are finding it is probably best to keep looking at other properties, and gleaning as much information as possible on the price, quality etc.
We just had the one quote for the thatch work, the only reason being that this chap had re-thatched the roof last time around for the previous owner who was very pleased with the quality of work. If not for this I would certainly have been seeking at least another one or two. 'Our' thatcher is not VAT registered either which is a bonus of course.
