Re: Cellar Quarry Tiles

Hi
I need to re-lay some quarry tiles on my cellar floor which seems to be soil.
Can anyone please tell me, do I need to bed them in with anything (Lime mortar?) or do I relay them straight onto the soil?



Secondly, below is a photo of a more cleaner section of the floor. What would have been used in the narrow gaps between the tiles as Grout (Lime?).

If the earth is still solid, I usually just relay them on that. In practice it usually gets broken up at some point in the removal process and I've found a bed of NHL/sharp sand mix works well to keep everything in place.
Interested to see what people suggest for grouting. The joint lines on the floor I did are quite fine and a tried a mix of NHL and sieved sand. Worked it into the joints dry, then sprayed it fairly lightly with water. This was not successful and over the past 6 months the hoover has pulled most of it out.

Have just put on a finishing coat of lime plaster that was 1:1 by volume NHL:fine sand. It was lovely to use and has polished off really well. I think a strong mix like that could work as a tile grout.

Always NHL 3.5 (always ones that claim to be 'cement free') as readily available from my local builders' merchants. 3:1 will give a reasonable mix for most jobs.

I used NHL 2, mainly as I had a bag already open. I think 3.5 would be better, although I suspect in most cases 2 would be ok if mixed properly, think I should have used different sand and a stronger mix.
