rain getting in at top of sash window

We have large ssh windows which do face south west and can therefore be 'in the weather'. Water drips in from the top homing bead and I cannot work out how it is getting there. We have had the front render on the house removed and all the stonework re pointed with lime. The window in question has had a new box frame and the window itself is sound. If the water is dripping from the top home bead, then water must be coming in above the window. I thought perhaps it was blowing up over the top sash, but that would not take it to drip from the home bead?

Around the top of the window frame are brick arches. I have presumed that the joints were made good when the pointing was done on the front of the house. ANy suggestions, is there a chance the bricks are porous or something obvious I have missed?

Not 100% certain which bit is the home bead? But to check if it's water blowing in over the top sash just wedge a bit of tissue at the top of it. Next time it's wet and windy you'll see where/if it gets soggy...

A bit of blue tack and more bits of tissue at strategic points may help to locate the point of ingress - water can move in mysterious ways

Let's just collect the facts first...

You say you've had the render removed. Was this render then replaced? If not, what is the relationship between the masonry and the window? If render went directly up to the face of the woodwork of the window previously and the render hasn't been replaced, what have you done to seal the joint between masonry and window? If the render wasn't replaced, do you think the window pre-dated the application of render?

Best of all, a photo or two would really help. Windows meet walls in all sort of different ways, and what may seem obvious to someone looking at the window can be quite impossible to grasp for the person who doesn't benefit from seeing it.

Once water starts to leak it sets up a capillary path and a surprising amount can enter through a small gap.

I think you need to get up and look hard at the pointing around the frame.

Did recently see some flush sashes with lead apron across the top of the lintel and extending below the head of the frame.. Unusual.

So the rain drips in from the innermost edge (room side) of the staff bead at the top - (am I right in thinking the parting bead is the one between the two sashes and the staff bead is the one on the room side?)

We quite often get water dripping off the top staff bead at several windows after heavy rain. Some localised re-pointing has helped but not cured the problem. It does need a lot of water before it starts doing it though and its not been that wet recently. For us I think its water penetrating in multiple places higher up the wall and then tracking down until it hits a recess and can go no further. We get the same in one of the fire flues. Unless you've had a lot of rain recently then your problem ought to be closer to the window itself. I wouldn't think its getting past the parting bead and then dripping as your describe. Did the problem start after the work was done?

Just a thought. Is there a drip groove on the sill above? Could the water be penetrating from the window sill above and dripping onto the top of the sash from within the wall?

I didn't suggest there was a hierachy. I tried to help someone solve their problem by asking a few pertinent questions, and that someone came back and responded to other people's questions or suggestions, but not to mine. Frankly, until those questions are answered we're shooting in the dark. This happened much worse in a "Soundproofing" thread recently. Anyway, apologies for coming across as tetchy, but that's because I was. I've drawn solidly without a day off for over a fortnight, and when my light relief (visiting a forum) doesn't prove to be light relief, I maybe over-reacted. Apologies.

However, I will be noting who does this sort of non-response thing, and taking a view on how much effort I make on their behalf in future.

I was a bit disappointed you didn't come back about the weird "Russian weapon" mirrors after I posted a link to them, but I guess we all dip in and out as work permits. I would be interested in your take on the technology though.

Plasticpigeon, yo may be right above the drip sill, there does not appear to be one on the sill above and this is something we have questioned, we did wonder if that would make a difference - if we make a groove in the cill and we point in around the bricks on the arch, we will see if that helps.

You can create the effect of a drip groove with a bead of silicone, if you want to try the theory out.

Indeed you can.
And under a stone sill you can make a permanent 'drip' by applying a sausage of Magic Metal or the like, and then moulding the profile to a triansglish shape.
