Radiator bench

If, by any chance, anyone should happen to come across a secondhand radiator bench anywhere at a reasonable price then please send me a pm. Needs to be fairly low and no more than 4'4" / 1.3m long.

They're a bit pricey new - cheapest one I've seen is £500, below.



Will be keeping an eye on Fleabay etc but they're not the most common item. It's to go in the bay window in my lounge, bring some much needed extra warmth! I'm really looking forward to the sub-floor explorations to get the pipework there....

It is! I did mean an all-in-one unit.

Making one is an option Zebra, but by the time I buy a suitable cast iron (or similar style - the one in the picture is a modern steel replica) radiator, that has to be floor rather than wall mounted so curtains can go behind it, then got a blacksmith to make a bench frame up for me and I make a top - I suspect a complete secondhand unit would be cheaper & less hassle.

A reconditioned second-hand will almost certainly be considerably more expensive than a modern new one (speaking from experience).

The metal framework is easily made from steel pipe and kee klamps or similar, then spray painted.

If a piped radiator is not possible then a suitable electric radiator such as Dimplex HAW1000N could just be placed on the floor.

What a great idea - but doesn't the wood warp on the top with the heat? Is it a solid chunk or engineered?

If I see one in my junk shop trawls I'll let you know.

Yes, I wondered that to. The one in the picture comes with a thick plywood top, which should be OK. I was thinking of experimenting by replacing it with a solid top made of some maritime pine I have, fixing it down well and seeing how it goes - on the basis that I could switch back to the original top if my one warped.

Engineered bamboo might work well. I floored a whole house in it (rental property so need to stand up to being treated less than gently) and was very impressed. V reasonable price, looks great 6 years on and even in wet areas and high traffic it looks exactly the same as in others.
