Quarry tile path

Help! I'm relaying a blue/black and red tile path - the tiles are 6 inch square and pretty thick. Some of the tiles that I've lifted seem to have a thin putty-like grout between them whereas others simply seem to have been laid edge to edge with no grouting at all. Any advice on the best way to relay these things?

I didn't grout but then I didn't mind a less than perfect flatness.

I'll be laying a floor from reclaimed 6 inch tiles soon. I plan to bed them in a lime mortar and use the same stuff as grout but with the tiles butted together so leaving as thin a crack as possible. If you do it this way take care that the lime doesn't dry on the tile surface as it's a drag to clean it off again.

Hi I have just relayed my back yard tiles you can lay them on a compacted ground and then onto sharp sand once they are down you can brush in kilm sand into in cracks to stop any movement .... mine look great but you usually end up with needing a few extra if you lay them differently

How did you compact the ground, PJ?
Did you do it when the soil was damp, or wait for a really dry spell?
And - did you find it was ok just treading over it, or did you hire one of those whacker-plate machines?
