I think I am going to need a new roof in the next couple of years. Nail rot causing slipping slates, one sinking area in part of roof. It’s a big house 5 bedrooms , south facing . Not listed and not in National Park.
Currently Welsh slate, no felting underneath. Has been there for as long as living memory. Occasionally find old stone slates in the garden so presumably originally roofed in those. Timbers inside attic look very woodwormy but after lurking here for a while I am not too worried about that. I had an upgrade to my loft insulation , courtesy of a Welsh government scheme.
I get slipped slates repaired regularly, gutters cleaned every year.
Very rural, oil fired aga, electric storage heaters, no mains gas, two wood burning stoves.
I have never gone for solar panels on my roof because a) I think they would look hideou and b) I don’t think the roof was designed for them so I was worried re structural implications.
Somehow I found a site called www.gb-sol.co.uk
Established in 1999 aas a spin out from Cardiff universit, they make, amongst other things, PV slates which look like slates but are made of toughened glass and aluminium .
Apparently they’ve been on Grand Designs and have also been used on the refectory in York Minster.
They need a border of natural or infill slates, obviously looks better if their matching infill slates are used.
Electrics and commissioning pack are extra.
There is a 25 year guarantee, which doesn’t sound very long to me! But I am 64 so they would hopefully see me out (?)
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this system, please?
Would I be safer sticking to the traditional Welsh slate roof?
Many thanks in advance for your wisdom.
