Protecting a bathroom wall from shower water...

We need to redo the bathroom that we inherited when we bought our house...see the attached photos - you'll see why.

We don't want to change the layout. In the wall behind the bath there are some nice beams that we'd like to keep on view. Currently the wall is protected from shower water by a shower curtain. We don't like shower curtains but this does work and we want to change it to something that looks a bit cleaner and sleeker. We're going to keep the electric shower in there too because this will become a guest bathroom after we've put an en-suite in our room and another shower room downstairs but these will happen much later on.

Can anyone suggest anything that would give us a more stylish, cleaner look while retaining character and keeping this wall dry and visible?

I've designed bathrooms with a bath screen fitted in that location to prevent water getting on a window sill. I've not lived with it, but the customers seemed to think it worked pretty well.

Or for a quick and easy fix that looks a bit more stylish you could go for a circular shower curtain

I think I'd be tempted by a second glass shower screen, but a pathological hatred of shower curtains has something to do with it! That circular rail one is a vision of hell for me - surrounded by the horrible thing to cling to you at every opportunity! (*)

I always think it looks a bit odd picking out a single period feature in an otherwise thoroughly modern setting, but it's not my bathroom

If it were mine I'd go foreither the total antique bath/shower set-up with curved glass surround at one end,looking a bit like a French street urinal, or else just plaster over the whole wall and tile it.
