proposed waste incinerator.

ive just found out the house msgil and my self are buying is fairly close to a proposed waste incinerator site. we are pretty much within the 'fallout' area.
should i be concerned about this? i am pretty sure incinerators have to abide by strict guidelines with regards to pollutants in exhaust gasses but there does seem to be quite a bit of blurb on tinternet to suggest that these things are still quite dangerous. i understand a lot of this blurb is coming from the NIMBY community but they do say a 20 mile radius is within the danger zone.

It's really too late for you to worry about isn't it? What kind of waste are you talking about? You say it's proposed, which probably means it's opposed too, in which case you'll probably want to add your voice. It might not happen, with any luck. But if it does, you'll be so excited and busy with your new place I think you're unlikely to notice it or care.

There's an awful lot of fuss made about about everything environmental but I think we just have to trust that the people in charge really do make these things as safe as they can to the best of their knowledge and ability.

I was worried about the spraying of pesticides moving here. Fuss is often made about that, but 1000s of people live alongside where pesticides are sprayed - my point being, that it's the complainers who shout the loudest, and that the vast majority, who are unaffected, say very little.

I was also worried that we're slap bang above a crematorium where bodies are incinerated on a twice weekly basis. But now I very rarely think about this, and I have a good crack with the grave diggers when I walk into town.

your right of course Joce and to be fair i would rather an incinerator than a land fill site. perhaps because i live close to it my rubbish will be taken away as opposed to down here where we are issued with the smallest wheelie bin known to man which only gets emptied once every two weeks. :shock:

I live in what looks like the middle od nowwhere, but is in fact right in the middle of everywhere.
I was going to reply to your post saying that there is a proposed waste incinerator going to built by us. We will be about 5-6 miles away.
It doesn't bother me.
Then I read your 20 mile radius and thought, oh dear......
The coal fired power station that we used to live by is within 20 miles, so are two really busy motorway networks, so are two landfill sites, one really massive one.
Then I remembered we are so close to some large chemical factories that there are regular practise runs for the emergency services.

By now I am so worried that I'm thnking of selling up, but thinking about it, would I be able to buy anywhere that sin't within 20 miles of something like that!!!!!!

I live in Chandlers Ford S. Hants. There is a Council Waste incinerator less then 2 miles away in Otterbourne. Absolutely not problems with it in the 29 years I have lived here. There was one incident when its control room was trashed by a load of hippies/rave party types looking for some fun :roll: about 20 years ago.

There was one incident when its control room was trashed by a load of hippies/rave party types looking for some fun :roll: about 20 years ago.

Well, that proves either I'm spectacularly inobservant, or that the incinerator doesn't have to be that noticeable, as I lived 2 miles away from Otterbourne for 8 years - in fact I even walked the dog there every day, at the service reservoir at the top of the hill - and I never noticed it!

FYI, I have a house in Chandlers ford and on retirement I took on the cottage in Wensleydale where I actually stay for about 75% of the year, just going home to cut the lawn etc.
About one mile north of the top of Otterbourne Hill is a mini roundabout, go west here (under the motorway) for about 1/2 a mile and you will come to the entrance of the incinerator.
FWIW you can see its plain concrete chimney (100' high?) for miles around.

Actually I do know where you mean now, but I had no idea it was an incinerator. I'd seen the entrance and assumed it was a quarry or waste transfer station. The chimney I hadn't noticed.....
