I came across this website, today, while hunting for some materials prices. It occurred to me that some people might find it a handy guide to discover very roughly what a given project might cost them.

The guidelines appear to be constructed by averaging the cost information that people provide to the website, so I imagine that the actual prices probably vary considerably.

But this might be handy as a place to start from.

Whta a fascinating website- useful to bookmark! Others will have more experience I'm sure, but many of those prices tally with quotations I've been supplied.

I'd like to add one I found out today. If, like me, you fancy some nice Adam style ceilings, like number 6 in this website http://www.stevensons-of-norwich.co.uk/service/spectacular-decorative-ceilings/, it will cost £6678 per ceiling excluding replacement of cornice,and VAT. I think it's worth every penny!

The cost of a new roof seems very cheap. £3948. What kind of measly little roof is that?

An attack of measles doesn't necessarily mean that you need a new roof.

Now you know that isn't strictly true. In the rare case of re-infection of Himalayan fever measles, destruction of all germ-harbouring surfaces is recommended, including rooves.

I can just see the thought process.....

Chris thinks £10 for some polyfilla to sort the cracks, maybe £30 for some paint, a new paint roller - job done.

Joce thinks Robert Adams and £6678 + VAT.......

I'm only teasing Joce, I'm sure Chris knows you far better than to think that! Quality and craftsmanship do not come cheap. Nothing wrong with a pipe dream either - my imaginary garage is filled with lots of very expensive old cars and motorbikes.

Project costs - My usual method is to work out the cost of a job and add 30% - 50% to it. I'm not usually far out!!

£3948 would buy you a new roof, if you have a small terraced house. Roofing costs depend hugely on what you're having done - if the original roof covering can mostly be salvaged and go back on, and the timbers underneath are in good condition, it's not always that expensive. If a new roof covering is required then costs start to go up straight away.

:lol: I'm chuckling at the very apt appraisal Feltwell. It was indeed just as you said, with the concluding lines being me saying "Darling, I know it's at the bottom of the list" and his response "Darling, it's not that high". My witty husband - grr.

Sorry, but no. I strongly suspect that the website is run by a bachelor, who has no knowledge of the marital calculation, "think of a number and triple it".

Much as I dislike the way Travis Perkins are taking over the world, they do have a very useful scheme
which has helped me manage a very large extension and refurbishment.

For £50 + VAT they will assess your plans and give a complete breakdown of materials / labour costs.
I found it very useful as a datum and as a checklist to work from. Although they hope this will result
in you buying all your materials from them, it is not conditional.

It was useful, when seeking quotations from builders, to sort out who was asking a reasonable price.

I took the estimate to my local TP and asked them for their best material prices. This resulted in a
big reduction in the overall cost. I then took their estimates and visited local material suppliers and
finally took the best of each. This came out at approx. 50% of the original TP estimate.

The major building work is now completed and has come in very close to my budget.

Not sure about the next bit though ! agree with your " think of a number and triple it " when it
comes to fitting out.

I thought of a number at the start of this project , that number fell to the side somewhere along the way and now numbers just don't seem to matter any more , 'everything I have got and will ever have over the next two years' is my new number.
Although today we had an estate agent round giving us an evaluation both for as it stands now and what its likely to be worth on completion, now they were a couple of very nice numbers that brightened up my day no end.
