I have been working long hours seven days a week on the Merchants House, hence my minimal appearance on the forum. We have completed boreholes for the ground source heat pumps, 260m worth lined with looped pipework pressure tested to 10 bar and back filled with approximately 9 tonnes of sand. Hearing sand drop down a 100m borehole splashing into water is a great sound.
Today we had our mains electricity connections and mains water supplies installed. We will only use the mains water for standby as we have a stonking supply of water in another borehole. We test pumped it at 6 gallons a minute this did not make the water level drop at all for the two hours it ran. Then we got bored and pumped it at 18 gallons a minute and the water level dropped by approx 300mm whilst pumping for 45 minutes. It recovered to its origional level in less than a minute when we finished pumping. We know the aquifer is at 35 metres down and the water sits at 24.1 metres down so I guess that is an indication of the pressure in the aquifer and that the drop of 300mm was more likely to be because the pumping at 18 gallons a minute affected the pressure in the well more so than the volume of water available. Suffice to say we have our own extremely good water supply which is off to be tested for purity and will deliver more water than we can ever use.
The kitchen is well underway just requiring doors, drawers, shelves and work tops to complete before applying finishes.
The garden is well underway as is the exterior of the property where we hope to re-lay the old cobblestones next week.
When all the landscaping and groundwork is finished in the next 2 or 3 weeks we should be able to move on with the interior works.
I have held off on the interior works for two reasons, firstly we will be using a huge amount of wide oak boards, over and near underfloor heating which would currently be absorbing moisture from the damp atmosphere thus causing bad shrinkage problems at a later date. We accept delivery of the heat pumps tomorrow and install next week for comissioning on 3rd of April. This means we can heat the building for the first time. Secondly due to the large number of high quality finishes to be installed I needed to get the groundworks completed to stop the immense amount of dust and muck being walked through the building.
Oh, I also have a conservator coming tomorrow to start conserving the west wall of the south wing with the fresco on it.
Anyway enough about me, I am hoping to make it to the Bill Bryson do, so who will be there out of the motley crew of the forum? It would be nice to know who to look out for and meet.
I am afraid its late and I cant be bothered to check for typos, nite nite all
Keep up the good work Evelyn, I wish I had more time to do the same campaigning.
