Problem with PPUK email links

Has anyone else had this problem?

When I receive an automatically generated email from PPUK, I click on the link to take me to the latest post in the topic. Nine times out of ten this works fine, but over the past week or so I have twice received the following report from Internet Explorer 11 (under Windows 8.1):-

This page can’t be displayed
Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://www.periodproperty.co.uk:80 again. If this error persists, contact your site administrator.

I've checked my settings and TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 (whatever they are!) are already switched on.

If I visit PPUK via the site's main URL, all is well. And usually the next email link works fine. It's just an intermittent nuisance.

Anyone got any ideas for avoiding this problem, please?

Probably needs sorting by admin, so maybe sending a message over to Simon with the error might help.

I did that at the weekend, but before he could reply I found that the next email link was behaving normally, so I messaged him again to tell him that the problem had gone away!

It's since recurred. If nobody here can explain it, I'll let Simon know again.

The port number is wrong. It should be 443 for https (I'm guessing the email is overriding it).

Probably a setting somewhere in the phpBB software.

Don't use the email alerts, but I get that message after I make a post. Since a week or three. I have to go back to the main menu via my Favourites.
Emailed Simon about it.
I guess he has other things to do, or perhaps it seems OK at his end.

Hmm I've just had an email about this topic and it looks wrong to me.

Not sure you can serve both http & https on the same port. I'd guess the template needs changing to get rid of the https bit or the 80 bit.

I guess it's related to the recent website update, though I wonder if it's only IE users who are affected?

I've not had any problems using Firefox on Win8.1.

http: uses port 80 (normally) and https: uses port 443 (normally). I know it's possible to specify a different port number when accessing a site - http://keithj.com:8080/path/ means use port 8080 - but I don't think the same port can serve both http: and https:

That said, I don't use the e-mail links so don't have the problem

Most of this stuff is pre-encoded into phpBB anyway, so should be automatic and problem-free.

Wires? You see this may be where I am going wrong, all my things are "wireless" :lol:

That's just what they tell you. There are wires in the wainscot that join up with other wires that go all over the world. It's like a giant spider-web that goes all over the world-wide world. Your wireless thingy only reaches as far as the wainscot where the digital spider-web grabs the electrons.

Ironically, the problem I outlined above just happened to me again - when I tried to follow an email link to this thread! The snake is eating its own tail!

's the blokes who came to my door earlier, innit. They work for an outfit called Government Confusion Head Quarterers.
I showed 'em all my licences, they scratched their heads in confusion, and went away. Just missed having their car tarmaced by the lads working on the road.

Simon is going to take a look at the problem.

As an interim measure, he says that the three characters ":80" (without quotes) should not appear at the end of a link. I'm going to try deleting them if they crop up again.

The :80 shouldn't cause problems cos that's the standard http port. It shouldn't be needed, either.
