Price for windows

I've had a quote to replace the 5 windows that really can't be saved.

There are 3 sliding sash approx 3' x 4' and 2 small casement windows roughly 18" x 22"

I've been quoted £3350 inc VAT for making them in reclaimed redwood. For a bit extra he could use reclaimed pitch pine.

He would be recreating the mouldings and structure to match the originals. To the extent he wants to take one of the originals out first so he can make an exact match.

How does that pricing sound?

I'm awaiting a price for five custom casements from a conservation joiner. I'll let you know.

Would have thought he could recreate from detail drawings, and shapetracer moulding patterns, which you can draw back onto paper.

My gut reaction is that the quote sounds pretty good. I always thought it was around £1000/window for wooden sashes (but that might be fitted, I used to live with a guy who fitted windows, didn't make them, but I may have remembered wrongly) but I'm totally out of the loop as I do most things myself these days. The most important thing is the quality really. The fact that he wants to copy them completely is a really good sign. I don't undestand why you would want reclaimed redwood, most pine from a builders yard is redwood, but reclaimed pitch pine if available would be excellent. It is totaly different, harder and more resinous and will last for a few generations.

That sounds a bargain to me.

I'm getting mate's rates on 13 new custom made painted hardwood casement windows and that's still coming in at about £720 per window, no mouldings etc as there are none of the originals left to re-create.

Yep, sounds good.

For comparison, 15 custom made casement windows in Accoya (bit more expensive than Oak) with heritage double glazed glass Argon filled, mostly about 1200x1000 was £16500 plus VAT so £1000 plus VAT per window is a good guide.

Casement 3x4' £1045 sapele, or £1124 accoya. Not much moulding, one opener.
Casement 2x3' £598 and £680. Ditto.
Bit bigger £688 and £792. One opener, no mouldings.

All plus VAT and plus glazing. Will be Heritage hand-drawn 3:4:3, don't have a price yet but £££.

Pitch pine is lovely and quite special. Rather wasted tbh if you plan to paint it inside and out, in that case I'd just use it for the external cill. If you intend to polish it internally, that's another matter.

Sigh. Is nothing simple these days ... another firm said they'd probably use sapele, but I see this is also on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Dang. The 'conservation joiner' who does a lot of Listed work, quoted me for sapele, and although I chose accoya instead it wasn't for conservation reasons 'cos I hadn't thought about it. Sapele somehow sounds less exotic than idigbo.
Back in 1990, I had a conservatory made in iroko as a substitute for teak, but needless to say, even back then, iroko was also threatened.

The bottom line is that unless we decide to cut the human population, in time pretty much every decent wood species will be threatened.
Yesterday I happened to pick up an odd length of 5x2" I've had for years n years, just a piece of constructional timber back then, but the weight/density of it compared to the flimsy quick-grown rubbish one buys now............ I had to use three trimmers across the front of my new garage where in the past one would have done, and even then it sagged.

. . . which gives me an excuse to post this photo again.

One piece of wood is from a stud wall I removed, believed to be from the 1930s but certainly no later, and the other piece is a section of modern 'carcassing' timber from a well known builder's merchant. I'll leave you all to guess which is which :wink:
