Price for fitting a kitchen

Can anyone tell me what a reasonable daily rate for fitting a kitchen might be - to include plumbing, wiring in appliances etc?

Lots of imponderables there. Are you using a qualified cabinet maker to fit bespoke units, or just a "handyman" to put together a kit kitchen?

In either case, you may find it difficult to find one person who can fit the kitchen and do the plumbing. In the case of the electrics you may legally obliged to use a qualified electrician. It depends what electrical work is required.

Can you give us more details of what your plans are?

OK. No, not bespoke units - more's the pity. But a friend's partner has offered to do the whole thing for £130 per day. I think that probably a 'Jack of All trades' would describe him. He's been in the building trade for years and has done up a couple of properties, doing plastering, tiling, fitting kitchens and bathrooms etc. So, basically he will be fitting flat pack units, plumbing in the sink,dishwasher, cooker etc and doing the electrics for task lighting and washing machine etc.

We did have some quotes from kitchen companies but they tended to lump the fitting costs into the overall price with the ubiquitous 'discount' thrown in. Just wondering how that seems as a daily rate.

I am a kitchen fitter and charge £150 to £180 a day dependent on miles from home and the amount of consumables that the job is likely to use. As for electrics, no one is allowed to do any wiring in a domestic kitchen unless they are part p qualified. Plumbing is fine as long as it does not involve gas or oil.

As far as Part P goes - I don't know about kitchens specifically, but for other things is it not the case that anyone can do the wiring, but it has to be then checked/certified by a 'competent person'?

I gather that can cost almost as much as having that person do the work in the first place though...

If you are satisfied that this fitter will be up the the job, £130 a day is very good value.

Find out how long it will take him , it is not good if he does a fantastic job but takes him a couple of years.

Thanks for your comments. Jeffbirks, you said £150 - £180 per day depending on consumables, so I take it that means that your daily rate will include the materials you use. This chap has asked for £130 per day and we pay for all the materials on top of that. Also what would you calll a day? 8 hours?

Yes, 8 hours is normally about right - you might get a bit more if your guy is conscientious.

However, Middi's point is an important one. A low daily rate (which this is) looks a good deal, unless the guy works very slowly. In which case it could work out more costly.

But if you're happy that he's got the skills, and will get the job done in a reasonable time-frame, I should go with him.

But not for the electrics. From what you've described, you definitely need a qualified electrician in order to avoid breaking the law.

So what credentials does a qualified electrician have?

That's actually quite a complex question. There seems to be a number of bodies who accredit. However, I reckon someone registered for Part P with either the IEE or NICEIC is a pretty safe bet.

My builder charges £160 per day for some of his kitchen work, includes all plumbing, tiling, sinks, fitting worktops and assembling flat pack kitchen, so £130 sounds reasonable enough to me.

Not true. What the regulations say is that installations in a kitchen are "notifiable" beforehand unless done by a "competent person"; someone who is Part P-qualified will be recognised as competent. Anyone else can do the work if they first notify Building Control (who may insist on inspecting it before approval). Interestingly, while a kitchen is a notifiable room one that only later becomes a kitchen doesn't appear to be so.

So what happens if you don't notify building control? And should that be the person doing the electrics or the person having the electrics done? (That notifies them, I mean.........)

When you come to sell and you don't have the certs etc it can prove difficult.

Just out of interest, then, we had our lights fitted by a friend who qualified as a sparky years ago but has spent the bext part of the last 20 years working on Harriers! I'm not sure he would have the relevant bits of paper to satisfy Mr Precott, so what would we need to do to get a cert?
