Hi there. I'm new to this and am preparing a lime plaster wall for painting. We're removing the wallpaper and then there's a thick layer of what looks like beige wallpaper paste or could be some kind of sealing layer. Ideally we'd like to remove this but underneath is a turquoise green coating (more wall paper paste?) before you get down to what I'm assuming is the original white lime. I'm now concerned that actually we're making things worse by removing the odd beige paste/sealing (?) layer at all, but I would like to get back to the plaster to repair it before painting, as the whole wall has been bodged many many times. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Depends on how much damage you are doing by removing it.
Whether the "sealing" is actually a sealant and is stopping the lime from doing it's breathing job.
How much time you have
I'd remove it all so long as I don't do too much damage.

We had a similar situation, sugar soap in warm water, sponging and some proper heavy duty wall paper scrapers (http://www.wickes.co.uk/Harris-Professional-Heavy-Duty-Scraper-100mm/p/154805) got us back to the plaster without doing too much damage (only had to patch the odd bit here and there).

It may paint - be careful if you remove it, a lot of old paints were lead based. We had all sorts of paint on our walls. I don't know how old your old your house is but quite often they painted decorations on the walls, my parents discovered some beautiful work on one of their walls (17th C Gloucestershire farmhouse). If you don't have to remove it may be best to let it be.

It is just possible that the turquoise green paint is not only lead based but contains arsenic for the green colour :shock: That Bonaparte chappie found out the hard way - just make sure you don't follow him!

What do you intend to paint on the lime plaster? Something breathable I hope - anything with "vinyl" is NOT breathable! Clay paint is very good.
