Preferred exterior paint for wood and metal

Apologies for starting another thread. I seem to have a lot of fingers in different pies at the moment...

With the roof work starting shortly, I need to take advantage of the scaffolding and get the rafter ends and one small sash window painted white. The cast iron guttering would also benefit from a paint.

I noticed Feltwell posted about paiting cast iron guttering a few years ago and recommended a standard Screwfix black paint. Has anyone else got any suggestions or experience painting cast iron pipework?

I have a lot of exterior woodwork that requires painting post repair... I've used Dulux Weathershield in the past but never stayed long enough in the house to know whether it was that durable. What are others using on their woodwork outdoors?

Screwfix seem to have stopped selling that black metal paint, the stuff they have now is pretty awful, which is a shame as the guttering I painted 12 years ago still looks good. I just tend to use Smoothrite now on metal. You can go the whole hog and use a 2-pack epoxy, depends how far you want to go - someone else on here used this (Ivor?) - it's expensive and requires prep but is apparently super tough and long lasting.

Woodwork - Bedec MSP, microporous water based paint, I'm definitely a convert to their products. You can use it on metal but I've never tried. Put Bedec into the search and you'll find old threads on this.

When I did my guttering and down spouts I used a red oxide primer and Johnstones professional gloss solvent based black paint. Both brushed on. Unfortunatly I cant comment on longevity because they were done less than 6 months ago.

For my windows, on Feltwells (as well as others) recommendation I too went for Bedec MSP. I had them mix it in Farrow and Ball colours. Its a nice paint to use with a good finish but again unfortunatly I cant comment on longevity.

Metal... assuming you never want to do it again.... if rusty, wire brush etc then Jenolite on the rust.
Then a zinc-rich primer.

For the inside of the gutter, I then finish with Rustbuster Epoxy 121

I have also used 121 on gutter exteriors and downpipes and in addition to not rusting it has the aesthetic benefit of [eventually] taking on that dusky Period appearance of lead paint.
Being a two-pack it's a pain to mix and use - one has to be quick - not helped by the fact that they sell it in standard tins, and pouring from a tin guarantees a mess. This is why I generally use it only inside the gutter, I think one could sum it up as laziness.

Ideally, gutters should be taken down and painted on the ground so you can get in the joints, otherwise the rust will creep out again. But that can be a faff. Otoh, painting it again would be a faff.

Any guttering that needs replacement, Longbottoms. They deliver in their own lorry. It comes ready coated, although I still paint it again.

Woodwork, I too am trying Bedec MSP. It better be good or MikeG will get lynched as he introduced the stuff and quite a few of us are using it.

If I wanted an oil paint, I'd use Sikkens AZ Rubbol gloss. I used to use lead, until the H&S crackpots made it vanish.

Longevity of the MSP, dunno yet.

I used Dulux weathershield on an external hardwood door about 10 years ago and it’s still in excellent condition. I used aluminium primer then Dulux undercoat before applying two coats of the black gloss. But. It’s a north facing door and receives no direct sunlight. South facing windows and doors (also black) have faired far worse and I’ve tried Sadolin (not bad) and linseed paint (pretty good) for these.

This year, I have three new south facing hardwood windows to install (again in black) and having read good things about Bedec MSP am considering using it. Perhaps I should use Bedec MSP for one window and Linseed for another as an experiment?

It looks like Bedec MSP is worth a go and it's good to know they mix Farrow and Ball colours. Presumably I could paint interior and exterior sides of my windows with the same paint. I'm surprised it is sold at Toolstation - that makes it convenient too.

The scaffolding is up now and I can take a close look at the guttering to see what level of effort is needed. Hopefully I can keep the current pipework and brighten them up with some fresh paint.

Yes, inside & outside no problem. I didn't know about Toolstation - looks like they just do black, white & grey though.

I found Promain to be good for online supplies in all the standard colours.

I used Sikkens Rubbol Satura Plus on external wooden frames and wrought iron windows plus a front door 3 years ago and it's all still holding up very well. Admittedly that's not a long test yet, although poorer paints may have failed by now. It is all north facing and relatively shaded from both light and weather, so doesn't get too tough a time.

It went on very well, nice to work with and gave a great smooth finish easily. I used it over iron oxide primer for the fully stripped back metal windows.

I got it from Decorating direct.co.uk for a competitive price from memory, although I didn't require excessive amounts. They sent next day for free, packaged well (which isn't always the case and I've opened boxes that have been decorated from the inside before!), which was helpful plus the comms with a human called David at their end were very helpful. They will mix colours for you from charts, but not sure how bespoke they can be...

That is an excellent idea, and as you have three new windows is there any way I could convince you to do the third one using Jotun Demidekk Ultimate Fönster? Testing those three paints together in a dark colour on a south-facing aspect is exactly the test I would like to do, but I don't have three suitable similar windows. I would happily contribute towards the cost of the paint and/or come and help you apply it. I am serious about this offer, please do let me know.
