Prefered varnish / laquer for sanded original floorboards

Hi all,

I know this is a very open question, but I am looking for recommendations / experiences with regards to Floor varnishes, my floor has been sanded by the builder (House built around 1840), I was originally going to user Ronseal Diamond hard Floor varnish (Antique Pine), but since the floor has been sanded, I am looking at using a clear varnish and don’t mind/ may prefer if there is a slight tint / darker shade to the floorboards once applied.

My builder directed my to a trade person/shop that he uses they suggested Rustins Floor Varnish, I've looked on specialist floor sites/companies they quite often use Bona products.

So out of Ronseal Diamond Hard, Rustin Floor Varnish and Bona (initially advised Mega Bona), one final one that was briefly mentioned to me is Junckers, what would you suggest or alternatives

Do stay away from varnish, you'll be very disappointed with it in 5 years. It doesn't wear nicely at all, and has a thin, plastic look to it that's not right for a period property. I'd use a traditional product - an oil sealant - basically linseed oil, and then a wax. Liberon make nice products.

Toby (the resident expert in all thing wood finishes around here), recommended Bonakemi Mega for floorboards.

I used it on our previous house for the living room and main bedroom, and lived there for 9 years without compliant.

I can report that other products can be inferior, as my sister used a floor varnish from one of the big sheds, and it showed signs of wear within a few years.

That's the problem with chemical varnishes. They look great when they're newly applied - and probably for some years afterwards. But once they start to wear through they look awful, and there's no effective way of repairing the finish. You have to sand it all off and start again (in your case this would mean removing even more of the boards' thickness).
