Suggestion for Simon - A PPUK Bibliography

We have new books for sale and a library of great articles, but how about a proper reading list to capture some of the great reference material that Gareth and others are so good at drawing our attention to? Some discreet advertising for second hand and antiquarian booksellers specialising in this area could also be of mutual interest.

May I set the ball rolling with a book that we non-experts can understand: Life in the Georgian City by Dan Cruikshank and Neil Burton; Viking, pub 1990.

Wonderful idea. Can I mention Cloudscape's amazing recommendation of "The Well-Worn Interior" by Robin Forster and Tim Whittaker, it really goes wih the ethos of conservation in this forum and shows how scruffy and scabby old stuff can look great just as it is.

I'd just like to recommend Whipplesnaith, The Night Climbers of Cambridge for those who like to combine getting up close and personal with old buildings, with the added excitement of a fall onto spiked railings.

Can I suggest a lovely book by Matthew Rice, called Building Norfolk?

Rice is a painter and designer, and the majority of the book consists of his watercolour sketches of a huge variety of Norfolk buildings - many of them vernacular - together with little scribbled notes and sketches on features that he has noticed, evidence of development and change, use of materials, his personal likes and dislikes, and so on. Each chapter covers a particular category of building and starts with a few pages of explanatory narrative.

It's a delightfully unstuffy, personal view of the enormous richness and variety of Norfolk's architecture.

Just out of interest, Matthew Rice is married to pottery queen, Emma Bridgewater.

While I'm on a roll, here's another recommendation.

For anyone with an interest in historic timber-frame buildings, there can be few more authoritative authors than Cecil Hewett. He tends to concentrate principally on Essex, but the breadth and variety of building frames that he studies (with drawings and diagrams) is fascinating.

The book I have is called The Development of Carpentry 1200-1700 - an Essex study. But he's also written English Historic Carpentry, which I plan to get. I believe he has also written one about churches.

I can't recommend a roof book, but I think you might find it useful to be more specific about the type of roof. For example, you might find a book called, say, "How To Build A Roof", and then discover that it only concerns itself with modern roofing techniques.

Is the roof in question the one that you're planning for your rear lean-to?

When I get a bit more time I will suggest some books (more of a technical nature) that you may find useful.

However, some of the books I have used over the years are no longer in print. What is the copyright position regar5ding out of print books and supplying copies (i.e. scans) for others?

Anyone here know?

Copyright in books remains in force for 70 years after the death of the author, in general. (The major exception is Peter Pan, but I doubt you'll want to post that).

There are exceptions for the purposes of criticism and private study, but that will not include making the volume available on a website to all and sundry.

Timber Building in Britain

Houses in the Landscape

Nathaniel Lloyd's
History of the English House

Margaret Wood's
The English Mediaeval House

amongst others.

The first couple are especially good for students. I know you can get second-hand copies, but for some of these I can find only a handful online available. It would be good if there was some way of copying these legally so that others can benefit from them.

Nathaniel Lloyd is out of copyright (died 1933), the others I don't think will be for some time.

If the books are still in copyright and the authors are still alive, would it be worth contacting them to seek permission to make copies? After all, you only want to make copies because you can no longer buy them.
