PPUK awards 2010

Well, as the year draws to a close, perhaps it is time to think of recognising some of the special people who make this forum the essential read it is every day (hour!).

A mix of serious and funny should match the ethos of the site... please post links to posts where relevant.

I'll kick off.

The first nomination is in the category of "Hoster of the Year" and there is one nomination - Simon Wright, for providing (tolerating?!!) the space here where we come together. Thankyou Simon.

i think he deserves on for "services to the grammar industry in the face of considerable vertebral adversity".

I think tact and diplomacy, laced with a dry sense of humour sums up 'our Penners'--- they don't make them like that any more!

May I gloss quickly over your misguided remarks by saying that I heartily endorse the award to Simon.

But let's not forget his sidekick, Rob. And everybody's favourite uncle, Stephen.

I also think that we amateurs ought to recognise the generosity of the professionals who kindly contribute their knowledge freely - certain well-known CO's, damp and rot specialists, surveyors, joiners, timber-frame and lime experts, and so on.

And, at the risk of sounding like the vicar at the flower show ("make sure you mention everybody, vicar"), I find that there are so many regulars who make this forum interesting, informative and bloody good fun.

I obviously totally agree with your comments.
Nevertheless, those eloquent " true " professionals which you quite righlty mention Penners, are in a more " technically professional league" and therefore are not in the " second " division like the majority of us. Now, if there ever was a "cup " to be presented to any league division winners they would not qualify because they are in a different league.
If we " promote" our status and compete with them at their own game in their own league none of us would ever win a damned thing. I am quite happy though to set up different category " gongs" :wink:

I'm going to have to have a good think about this tomorrow, when I'm not at the critical stage of baking a souffle, but Award for Most Missed Contributor at the moment is going to Carole- Schoolmarm- who has been experiencing awful difficulties with her Internet connection for a very long time, at least, I hope it's just that and nothing more serious.

A big welcome to our newcomers this year too who have provided much interest with new properties!

And yes, what a wonderful space is provided for us here by Simon and Rob - many thanks to them both for all their hard work.

I would also like to add to all the thanks to Simon and Rob for providing this small playground in cyberspace where the inmates are allowed to run around and generally make a noise during break times.

As for awards, I'd nominate all those wonderful, silent edifices to bygone eras; the period properties that many of us have the good fortune to inhabit and become part of their own history for future occupiers and guardians to enjoy, as we enjoy them today.

Hopefully, the sharing of expertise and experiences, facilitated by PPUK, will help us all do our best to keep such properties in good condition for future generations.

Can i nominate a post from 2009? Its something that Middi posted ages ago and has stuck with me. He basically explains how to externally insulate a breathing timber framed house and as with all of Middi's advice this was spot on. The term 'breath-ability' gets thrown around quite a lot without it would seem actually understanding why and how it works and where to apply breath-ability and where its not really needed. Just because materials that have the ability to breath were used in certain circumstances this does not mean a more modern none breathing material cannot be used in the same circumstances. If that makes any sense?

I think a lot of you are getting your knickers in a twist.

Let us start all over again. If contemporary insulation is used on a wattle and daub timber framed buildings to complement and improve the already good insulating qualities of the daub it is not a problem whatsoever. AS LONG AS, the building is able to breath from within and from without , it is not absolutely necessary for the breathing mechanism to travel back and forth through the walls.

Any moisture or water that reaches the insulating material will not reach the studs, therefore it is impotant that whatever type of external cladding is used above breathing paper and battens must be BREATHEABLE otherwise the battens will rot. CEment is totally useless due to the fact that it is extremely rigid and therefore will not follow the perpetually moving frame. Cracks will appear, water will penetrate, cannot escape faster than it goes in and will induce rot, BUT NOT TO THE OAK STUDS, because the isnsulated unbeatheable material will stop water getting that far. It is important that the breathing mechanism is correct within the building, any internal moisture that may reach the studs and the inner face of the insulation will be "SUCKED" in by the baub and as long as this can be reasonably ventilated it will work in the opposite direction and suck out any moisture that is likely to accumulate on the inner surface of the insulation or studs therefore extremely imporatant not to use any impermeable covering within the building inner walls or on top of the daub. It is a question of balance of materials.
I have adopted this method on G II listed buildings for a number of years and it works extremely fine, the CO's have had no objection to this approach. Different story on G I buildings.

I have suggested what has woked for me, and at least I made a suggestion which I know it works, there is not much science in this, or my approach, just observation and experience.

After all that is how these building were built in the fist place.

I am the last person on this forum which advocates indiscriminate use of modern materials on traditional buildings, BUT, if cleaverly adopted they can help save and prolong the life of these decaying buildings.

This is why I suggested lap boards work better on these buildings than ANY type of hard renders, this includes lime renders.

Thank you for the nomination FW but the post was a product of reading a thesaurus for ages and bending my brain on all those big words that I would other wise have no knowledge of at all.

I know these are supposed to be the 2010 awards, but let's not miss the opportunity of presenting our Longest In The Top Twenty Trophy.

This must go to Graham's Top Tips, started by skier-hughes - it's been running since 2007, and still going strong!

This must surely be regarded as empirical proof of the Law Of The Perversity Of Inanimate Objects - otherwise known as Murphy's Law and/or Sod's Law. Whatever you call it, the principle is still the same:
