Posting pictures

I have not been able to post any pictures on here for ages. Always used Shrink Pic, which we still have, but PPUK tells me that the images are too big and won't upload them. I have no trouble loading onto the other place and always used to be able to load onto here ---any ideas?

It's all a mystery to me this loading up pictures! I use Paint to reduce the size of the picture to 750 pixels and, on the whole, they load OK but the odd one occasionally gets rejected as being too big but after I reduce it to 700 it invariably gets accepted...

I'm an admin in another place (aviation related), where posting of pictures is even more of a habit than here.

That board doesn't accept "uploads" - the pictures have to be hosted elsewhere and linked: I use my own webspace, but otherwise Flickr or Photobucket will work.
I suspect that may be the same here, or the available space for uploads may be full, so the software refuses to accept any more.

There is an inbuilt width limit in phpBB (the software that runs this board), which can be changed by the administrators. I think it's set to "no limit" on here.

There is also a brilliant optional "resize image" function for phpBB - so you can link to any size picture and have it show OK, but I don't think it works here...

and without it the picture is too large...

but if I shrink it to 800 pixels wide, it should be OK...

I always use Photobucket, simply copying and pasting the IMG code.

I've always used the "Upload Attachment" tab which appears below this page where I am typing my reply. Upload a .jpg and it appears - There's a size limit of 256 KiB it says, and that's good enough for most things. Failing that, load them to a blog and give a link to that!

Joss - I can only think that your image files are still too big. Shrink Pic only allows you (if I remember correctly) a choice of three compression settings. Do you always select the smallest file size? If not, you should. Even then, if your original file size is pretty big, you still may not be achieving sufficient compression.

I can't remember the exact limit to image file size on this forum, but a figure of 120 kilobytes seems to ring bells.

You might have more success if you download a different free image resizing package called Fotosizer. It looks a bit more complex than Shrink Pic, but if you just stick to using the Custom Size and Preset Size functions, with a bit of practice you should find it easy to compress images to an uploadable file size. Make sure you select the Standard Edition of the software, which is free.

Thank you Kind Folks, I will investigate 'paint' which is what OH suggested too Joce, and I have just found the shrink pic setting so will click the smaller size box---maybe it reset itself to a different size as it always used to work on PPUK upload--and if all else fails, thank you Penners--I will change to foto-sizer--- funny that it was your suggestion years ago to use shrink pic, so you are clever!!

A bit late to be useful, but I have noticed that if I post pictures on facebook and then save the posted one it is small enough to upload as an attachment here. I have not encountered a problem loading a big file picture there, it automatically makes it a manageable size.
