Postbox recommendations?

Hello again,
We bought a wooden postbox from Garden Trading about 9 months ago and already it has fallen apart. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions/recommendations for a good-looking postbox that might last a little longer than the last one please? It has to be attached to a brick gate post approximately 2ft wide and is set about 50 yards from the house. Any suggestions very welcome.

Wow, tobydog! Fantastic site but who the hell can afford those?
And, even if I could, FamilyWiggs has pointed out the downsides to having anything made of decent metal around the place so - who wants one of those lovely red boxes anyway?

So looks like we will have to suffer soggy mail for a while yet.

The normal postman certainly wouldn't have done that, lovely bloke .

I'm reliably informed that the postmaster at Acle told delivery staff to stop leaving undelivered parcels at the South Walsham subpost office.
If he hadn't done that then that 74 year old could have walked 200yrds to collect her parcel, rather than make a 6 mile round trip for which there is no public transport.

Ha! Wheelie bins - we should be so lucky. Our local council requires us to separate our rubbish in four categories which then have to be put out on different days, not outside the farmhouse, oh no! But at the top of the hill on the main road. Three categories of rubbish are put in different coloured plastic bags which the crows promptly rip apart, redistributing the contents across our lovely landscape. And the food caddy that is meant to be emptied weekly is regularly forgotten about leaving rotting food to moulder for weeks. GRRR.

Thanks for the good link Owain: In the meantime, I am going to ask the postie to put everything into a large lidded green container that I have reclaimed from our London house and hope for the best.

My council supplies nice plastic post boxes. They reckon they are for collecting food waste, but attached to the front gate with cable ties, and with a few drain holes drilled in the bottom, they are great for letters and small parcels.

Looking at those made me wonder how our lovely feathered friends are supposed to know the difference between a bit of free social housing and a place where they will be pelted with folded paper :lol:

I made one, years ago, from a few pieces of available wood. It had a hinged flap on the top for the postie to lift. The birdies seemed to get the message and built in the nearby nestboxes made in similar style. We had no complaints!

This was in Norfolk. Birdies were too thick to work out how to open the flap on the letterbox. There was no closing flap on the nesting boxes.

One daffy swallow (or two, maybe) built a nest on the fluorescent light fitting in the carport up there.
