I understand the fee for non-members is £20. I really don't know Thetford but always feel I should pay more attention to the place when driving through to other places.

Like you, I have mostly regarded Thetford as a plce to drive through, rather than stop in. But my fleeting and possibly incorrect view has always been that its few gems are greatly outnumbered by the considerable volume of crap.

Sadly, quite true. Thetford has some marvellous history and was once a place of significant importance but those days are long gone. I understand the rot set in when it was designated as a London overspill town.

That could be very beautiful if done well, and it looks like it comes with a decent plot. That estate agents website also shows a former railway goods shed which is intriguing - hard to tell from the pictures but that could also potentialy make a fantastic converson. It looks however as if it is being marketed primarily for demolition and redevelopment :evil:

I regularly referee football matches in the South Norfolk area. I can say that without question, the teams from Thetford are consistently the rudest, most aggressive, unpleasant and violent. This applies to all age groups.

My last visit to Thetford was to the bank, where two Eastern European gentlemen started urinating inside the bank whilst queuing..before exiting and breaking into fist fight on the pavement outside.

There are some pretty rough estates on the outskirts of Thetford. It's a shame, because in parts it is a very pleasant place indeed.

Sadly this seems quite common for overspill towns. Thetford at least has some nice parts.

Winsford, Cheshire - Liverpool overspill. I really can't think of a nice part of Winsford. I suppose the bit of the original town up by the station is OK.
Runcorn - likewise, Liverpool overspill.
Telford - Wolverhampton overspill.

The estates that were built as part of the overspill plans in the 60's seem almost without exception to now be beset with social problems and low quality housing. In general, the post-war planners seem to have a lot to answer for, especially when it comes to social housing. The boom in council house building in the 1920's and '30's seemed to produce good, solid houses that are perhaps rather uninspiring but still today fulfill their original purpose of providing good quality family accomodation. It makes me wonder how, 30-40 years and a large war further on, the next boom in social housing construction could have gone so badly wrong.

I have heard that Thetford has declined in the list of places most liked to be lived in! Pity.
