Possible old drain cover

New part of the house. Pulled out the kitchen units and great the previous owners had screeded up to units. The grey area next to Lino in pic when you tap it it sounds hollow as if it was an old drain as this area would have been the outside where a drain may have run. My plan is to screed over it to make the height up.

Makes sense, your only other options are do nothing and remove the screed layer from the entire floor. A lesson from when I encountered the same issue many years ago - verify the siting needs of power, gas fittings etc. to ensure that any necessary modifications to new cabinets are made before they are installed. Also that there will be no issues arising from the new height variation and cabinets above - a mate of mine made an assumption and ultimately had to abandon some new wall cabinets as they would no longer fit under the ceiling.

think I’m going to screed over and avoid opening up a can of worms. If it is a drain it’s not used anymore as new drains were installed years ago. Also it’s been like it 40 odd years already. Using ercol dresser bases as units. Dirt cheap and properly made.

Interested where you got your dirt cheap bases from as second hand ercol dressers start at online auction sites at £300-£400

Look on Facebook marketplace. The cheapest was £40 especially if there dark wood but they go well as kitchen units

Personally, Ive always tried to avoid the Facebook thingy but glad to hear it has some practical use.

By the way, did you get that novelty plant pot in the garden from there too? At least, I'm hoping its a plant pot as its other uses could prove a little draughty.

I am sooo annoyed with you. Do you realise just how many complaints I've made about my specs? I laud the re/up-cycling but why put me in the position of grumbling at a, for once, innocent optician?
