Point York Stone floor in lime or cement?

Hi there
I'm laying a york stone floor in a new extension and in part of an listed building dating from 1450.

The builders are suggesting a cement-based mix to blend in with the grey York. I have St Astier and lime putty available and a range of sands.

I am tempted to use lime but will it look out of place the white against the grey?

Please don't use cement - it will really be bad for the stone and look very out of place! Use lime.

What sort of builders working on this sort of building would suggest cement???!!!!

Use non-hydraulic putty - not hydraulic (St A) and you can mix with aggregate to suit. Take care not to get on the flags - if you can, mask off.

After a day or so, once it's started to cure, rub it up carefully with something suitable - we used those stainless steel pan scourers.

It will darken down a bit in time anyhow (muck!)

Add a little earth to your lime mortar if you don't want the bright white look. Ues te subsoil from a spade's depth down.
