Please can you recommend Building Insurance firm?

Please can anyone recommend an insurance company that is prepared to insure a 300 year old house with over 50% flat roof (I know, I know, nasty extension they did in the 60s) that will have major building work taking place? Thanks....

They wouldn't insure over a rebuild value of 500k if I remember correctly from 2 years ago. I then decided that it would be ok and was waiting for them to ring back but they didn't so I ended up going with Sterling.

Mine is insured for well over £500k with NFU.

I felt at the time that the girl I spoke to wasn't understanding what I wanted which is partly why they were meant to ring me back. Anyway.the car is insured with them so I may try again at renewal.

Mine too.

Indeed it was rather a shock to me at the time, going from a modern-ish house (1950s) for which the re-build cost was about 1/3rd of its market value to one where the rebuild cost is about twice the cost of its market value.

Are you actually in residence? We found that, despite all the positive recommendations, NFU wouldn't insure our (unoccupied) house while it was being made liveable so we went via LPOC to Lark Insurance.

NFU wouldnt touch us, we went through self build zone in the end.
500 years old , structural work , thatched roof, a really good policy as well, slightly over 1k a year, 375k rebuild costs.

I will be in residence. For the last year I wasn't, and unoccupied insurance wasn't hard to find on the internet, seems the reason my current insurers won't renew is the major works due to take place. I'll try La Playa too. Thanks..

I took out additional insurance with self build zone when we started our renovation because there are a lot of things that standard house insurance won't cover if you are having serious work done even if you're there.
Unsurprisingly Norwich Union removed our storm coverage while we reroofed the back section (even though it was unoccupied at the time and the front was separate and untouched). SBZ provided cover for liability for accidental injuries to the workers (some of whom were paid direct), theft of building materials and accidental and life cover for me while labouring on the house. At the completion it converted to a standard building insurance policy.
I never had to claim but for about £1200 for 18 months on a £180,000 renovation it seemed sensible.
