'plastic paint', cracks and a C18 Georgian timberframed semi

i have desribed this house in other posts, but in brief, it was built around 1820, it is a timber frame stud work with lime render on the outside and lime plaster on the inside.

It has in the past been painted (and painted again) is what loks and feels like a plasticy paint, it is certainly not limewash or a water based paint. Crack are prevelant along the side wall and on the front. When it rains you can see rain build up in bubbles.

I really am asking the obvious here, but do you think i should get the scaffold up and strip all the paint of and patch plaster it? or would it be better to take all the render off?

Being water based is not necessarily the answer - Weathersheild is a water based paint.

It will be a long job - but I'd try to get the paint off and then patch the existing.

Ask Strippers of Sudbury. The joy of poultice strippers is the fact you go awy and leave them to work!

i have a paint sample to send them. I am worried that the water will have damaged the timber behind. I dont suppose i will know the true extent until i have taken it off.

so...I have started to remove the paint from the front of the house. I am using a scaper and a heat gun where it is stubborn. for the first six feet there appears to be some sort of skim coat or water proofing a couple of mm thick on top of the lime render. When i initially removed some paint i thought it was a gypsum skim coat, but it melts when i put the heat gun on it.

any ideas what it could be??

i thought it was gypsum plaster because it is the same colour...

I offer my sympathy - though my 18C cottage isn't timber framed and is small I shall be spending next Spring/Summer out front with my scutch hammer taking all the plasticky stuff off (with sanction of my kindly CO) and then I shall Lime wash - I'm thinking of starting training soon so i'm fit enough. Big job - dirty,noisy for the eccentric neighbours but hell what else would I do .....watch trash TV? good luck you're not alone its a national problem.
