Plas Teg - Jacobean House Restoration

Ruth Watson strikes again! -with a new series of Country House Rescue on Thursday night.

Last night featured Plas Teg with its incredible owner & saviour Cornelia Bayley. However lucky she may have been (with her ex-boyfriend of 20 years paying the maintenance bills) the huge amount that she had achieved, largely single-handed, in a house of this size is truly humbling.

Plas Teg is a very fortunate to have an owner such as Cornelia, her panache and flair have saved it from the dreaded gut rip and strip, and also from being moth balled into a no touch zone. It's great .

Deeply moving, I thought - an astonishingly beautiful house with a very fascinating owner (who's probably a whole lot more grounded than they made her appear). Her resistance, to date, of commercial ventures is so understandable - there's a fragility to that fairy-tale creation that won't stand up to much entrepreneurial hiring out. What's needed really is a continuation of the current state of affairs - a big fat yearly cheque from a lover.

And I loved the parrots too, a house like that needs exotic pets.

Ooh - I need to watch. Plas Teg is about 5 minutes from me. Kids got scared witless when the school took them on an unannounced visit and they got the whole ghost/hanging experienc...

I'm not so sure about the parrots, though. Being cooped up in that dark space doesn't look like a good life to me. Particularly when compared with the accommodation they provide for the parrots at Waddesdon Manor.

I haven't seen the parrots at Waddesdon Manor, but now want to. It did look dark in that avairy, and I wouldn't keep my birds like that - but for all we know when the cameras aren't there they might ride round on her shoulder all day.

Joce - at Waddesdon there's the most wonderful outdoor aviary, and during the day they open the doors so that the parrots can fly free. As the whole place is built on the top of a hill, the birds can soar over (and perch in) the trees. It's worth going just to see them.

In which case it really does sound like the most perfect day out, though it would almost certainly end in me wanting parrots as I've wanted them very badly since I was tiny. ( I'd teach them Rochester's poetry - such fun!)

Joce - be warned.
Once you've seen the Waddesdon aviary you'll realise that providing proper accommodation for parrots will be quite an undertaking. They won't be satisfied with the sort of humble home that satisfies your chickens, you know.

And, to whet your appetite, this is a bit of background history:

One of the most unusual features of the garden is the Aviary. Completed in 1889 by an unknown architect, it was built for Baron Ferdinand [Rothschild] as a reminder of one he had grown up with in his childhood home, the Villa Grüneburg outside Frankfurt. It is made of cast-iron in the style of a rococo trelliswork pavilion, such as those erected at Versailles and Chantilly in the early eighteenth-century.
