Planning Permission & Solar Panels

Welsh Assembly "Government" announced today that planning permission to install solar panels on the roof is to be scrapped for all buildings, saved listed/conservation area.

That will undoubtedly lead to some aesthetic horrors, but it had to come.

Maybe examples like the pic below will become so common that we don't notice them any more? :?

The setting's quite nice, and these houses (a barn 'converted' and split into two houses) are very visible. Because of the lie of the land, my eye level when taking this pic surreptitiously was about dorma height. I suggested that they swapped the panels for plasma screens, and we could have a drive-in cinema. 8)

Most modern houses are so horrifically ugly I don't see that one more eyesore on them makes much difference. Solar panels on my roof though- over my dead body.

What is it that gets into people when they do 'barn conversions'?
Most of them end up looking like bog-standard new builds, with a few beams and rafters left exposed - the one in that picture is a prime example.

I'm afraid, to my eye, the solar panels in the picture are less of an afront than the bizarre spacing and sizing of the dormers! What is that all about?

What that's all about is a barn 'conversion' that I don't have to see every day.

This is the 'development' that used to have another 1.5 outbuildings that included the cheese stone that I rescued. It's not been nice watching the place gradually change - strangely fascinating and depressing. The barn in the pic had no dormers. The door and window arrangement was quirky and appealing. The wooden-clad bit was a long section of timberframing (it's now concrete blocks). But don't get me started.

If the quirky window arrangement is the same as was there before, then I guess you have just exposed my innate prejudice! Is it right for me to find an old building with a quirky window arrangement appealing but criticise a similar arrangement in what now looks like a modern building? Architects would have a field day with me!

No... I think you're fine. There is such a thing as "quirky and unappealing". :wink:

If you peer at the pic, you can see changes in the stonework. At ground level were mostly doors, with small windows let into the top of the wall, in the timbered section. It's almost unrecogniseable now.

I'm afraid the pic shows up another of those pet-hates that irrationally irk my non-artistic love of symmetry - all the upstairs windows have additional width of framing for the opening half, so that when they are shut there is a lop-sided look to them. Surely it would be fairly easy to add additional width to the non-opening half to make them look balanced!

Strangely, I have never seen this around here in the North (probably because everyone seems to put in single sheet "turn and tilt" uPVC) but noticed it a lot on a recent foray to the deep south.
