We found this under the plaster we took off the wall at the bottom of the stairs .Wondered if anyone knows what it might have been. Hope the pics attached. Thanks
As at present is nothing more than a 4/500 mm square hole that has been bricked up. as to why, ?????????.
If it is an external wall it could have a number of reasons why it was there ( feeding beggars, for example ??)
If it is an internal wall, it could also have a number of reasons ( wife feeding husband after a row, for example  )
Nice to see you back on the site Middi. Bevmarley, sorry I really haven't got a clue! Are the stairs in their original position? The room may have had a different use at one time.
The room behind this square is the living room so until we take the plaster off we wont know what is behind it.Dont know much about the the house although I have been trying to find out. There was an indenture between Thomas and Diana Beaumont and Archibold Pears in 1826 so it mut have built around then and the Beaumonts owned eveeything around here. It was a mining estate so it may have been a miners cottage. I dont know how much the original house has changed apart from an extension in the nineties.
It is approx 2' 6 above the floor and 18 inches square . It was covered by lime plaster and tanked over the top. The stones inside the squarewere already there and pointed in lime. The is nothing in the ceiling unusual. Thanks
