Finally got around to taking some pics and transferring them to the PC.....thought i'd share a quick pic of our place. This the the rear elevation...the main house was built in 1780, with the annexe to the left of the pic built in 1830. From the deeds and inspection of the brickwork etc. it appears that there used to be a glass construction on the rear of the house (in the centre of the main building)...I assume that this was some kind of orangery?

Not that funds permit, or that we need the space....I personally think it would spoil what is a nice elevation - what do you think?

Other points of note:-

1. The roof used to have a flat top (you might see a slight change in pitch halfway up). It was comandeered by the RAF as a spotting point during the war. Apparently, there were lots of leakage problems and at some point the roof was pitched. We still have a set of stairs in the attic which appear to go nowehere now.

2. There used to be a window on the first floor in the middle....this has been bricked up at some stage (the brick colouration is different). Inside, an internal wall has been inserted (L&P...so some years ago) and this would have run through the middle of the window.

The stairs used to go up to the flat roof....but when the pitch was added, the stairs were left inside the attic....now seemingly going nowhere

I can blame the gardener....we let him loose on the sit-on for the first time. I don't think he's recovered yet.

Here's the front

You can see the remains of an earlier building (flint construction)...this wall was simply 're-used' when the house was built. The porch is a later addition and to my eyes looks ugly (it also cuts right across the fanlight above the door).

Yes - they are enourmous. In fact we believe that behind the current victorian grate, there may be a much larger fireplace (given the date of 1780), but this will be investigated further when the time comes to decorate that room.

We had such severe problems with rooks nesting and it's not possible to fit a cowl (since the opening is so large). So we constructed wire 'cages' which our sweep plonked over the top of the stack. Quite tricky, since the stack itself extends apx 8 ft above the roof!

It's nice to share photos and have such lovely feedback....reminds me why I love the house and how all of the hard work is worthwhile

Lovely basin in downstairs cloakroom - We still have the original invoice. It was supplied by Heals of London and the invoice has 'Good to Harling Road' written on it. Harling Road is a nearby train station and the basin was transported (with a bath in another room) by train from London

This is the fireplace in the drawing room (underneath the huge chimney)...see why I think it may have a larger fireplace behind? The mirror was left in the house by the previous owner....it was caked in paint and missing mouldings etc. A local lady called Jo Green http://www.gildingandrestoration.co.uk helped restore the mirror by remaking some of the mouldings and then gilding the mirror. It has been dated at around 1800-1850.View attachment 2

Another less spectacular fireplace in the morning room. Seems that most of the fireplaces in the principal reception rooms were replaced in the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Whilst the fireplaces in the bedrooms escaped and are largely original.

Although in my defence, it's not hooooge....it is in fact relatively small by today's standards (at least that's what I keep telling Mrs F)

I have an aversion to posters on walls (I know how long it took to hang the lining paper and decorate)...but luckily we have found these 'poster hangers' which make the job of changing posters (which seems to happen very regularly) much, much easier
