Period tools.

On freecycle there was some garden tools listed , as my spade had broke I decided top send an e mail.
When i went to collect there was some garden toold plus a couple of old saws. One of which was a henry disston saw from 1874. :shock:

Lovely old thing it is, a really well made quality saw still going after 120 or so years , you dont get these in B+Q.

My father has been lucky enough to inherit a whole host of Victorian tools from various Great Uncles of his - a silversmith, a carpenter and a shoe maker, amongst others. I guess he got them as he is pretty much the only male in the family of his generation, they seemed to have a lot of girls! One day - hopefully a long time away yet - they will be mine.

The quality of a lot of them is certainly a testament to the original makers. That saw is lovely Rob - but they are a pain in the @rse to sharpen! There is something to be said for cheap hardpoint saws, although throwing them away after only a few months/years isn't very green!

Beautiful, beautiful saw (I love old tools but have no space for any more WHATEVER and must NOT get tempted) but I doubt it's as old as you say.

Victorian saw handles were usually more ornate:

the back of the saw often had a detail at the end furthest from the handle like this:

and unless the saw has been immaculately cared for the steel is likely to have a pretty heavy patina.

According to the medallion and etchings it dates from between 1896 and 1917 so still quite old. I will put up some piccies later if I get time.I'm going to go and saw up some stuff now , its still quite sharp.

My American brother-in-law gave me a Disston saw, about 35 years ago.

It mysteriously disappeared during a house-move. :evil:
