Period schools.

Apparently schools are to become 30 percent smaller to save money. The architecture is to become very plain and simple for new educational buildings. I found this while researching how pre schools damage our kids and in some instances makes them more agressive and can do psychological damage to them in later years, but thats a different story.

Isnt it strange how badly we treat our children, I bet if this was a council/government building of some kind being built they would spend a bit more money on it, or a new tax office.

5% smaller for primary schools and 15% smaller for secondaries than the last government's Building Schools for the Future programme - leading to constuction savings of 1/3rd. That's apparently £6m saving on an average secondary school. You can do a lot of things with six million squids.

In the current climate, anything which is appropriate (and this is the test) but is a third cheaper has to be considered.

Bigger is not always better - as I keep reminding SWMBO!

Basically it is a very good idea.

The local secondary school (1600 pupils) was housed in a "modern" curved-shaped building full of hidy holes and bolt holes (doors on either side of entire length) that was a nightmare to police and keep order.
It was a depressing building, designed by someone who possibly never had to keep a building clean.

Far better the costs are kept down than wasted on expensive and pointless design for the sake of it with no thought for upkeep and maintenance.

I work in a curved NHS PFI building. Now that's a waste of money! Shockingly expensive poor quality offices.

Speaking as someone who was educated in a poorly built, 1960's sectional school building - this doesn't sound like progress to me. A lack of extravagance is one thing, so long as kids don't end up in a cold, draughty, leaky building like the one I went to school in. It's still there and in use by the way.

Our children are the people who will be running the world when we are long gone, why would you want to skimp on a future generation? To be honest though the way things are going with our schools I reckon you will see more and more people turning to home schooling and the like.
I spoke with a woman a while back at a childs birthday party who home schools her kids and the difference between her kids and schooled kids was very apparent, they were calm and well behaved while the schooled kids were running around like mental cases on steroids hitting each other and snatching toys etc etc.
